Wonky Churches

The tour on the third day also included a short visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a massive cathedral, where an Aztec peasant convert saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on top of a hill. Construction began in 1531 and was finished almost 200 years later in 1709. Millions of Mexicans flock here each year - its an important pilgrimage site. Something I had no idea about is that Mexico City was built on top of a former lake. So many, many buildings are beginning to sink - including this one... In anticipation of it falling down, a new church was built in 1974-76. Walking inside the old cathedral feels like you've got vertigo, the slope of the floor inside is so steep!
